How to Print Party Invitations at Home (Like a Pro)

Printing your own invitations at home is fast, affordable, and easier than you'd think. With the right paper and a few simple settings, you can get crisp, professional-looking results. Here's how.

1. Choose the right paper

Regular printer paper works in a pinch, but for invitations we recommend cardstock (around 80–110 lb / 200–300 gsm). It feels sturdy and premium. Matte cardstock is forgiving and easy to write on; glossy makes colors pop.

2. Download the right file

From Canva, download your invitation as a PDF Print file for the sharpest quality. If your printer prefers images, choose a high-resolution PNG.

3. Use the correct print settings

• Set paper size to match your design (most invitations are 5x7 inches)
• Choose Actual size or 100% — never Fit to page, which can shrink your design
• Select Best or High quality
• Pick the correct paper type (e.g. cardstock) in your printer settings

4. Print a test page first

Always print one test copy on regular paper to check the size, colors, and margins before printing the full batch on cardstock. This saves paper and ink.

5. Trim cleanly

For straight edges, use a paper trimmer rather than scissors. If your design includes crop marks, trim along them for a perfect finish.

No printer? No problem

You can also upload your file to a local print shop or an online printing service. Many offer cardstock and envelopes, and you can pick up your invitations the same day.
